The theme of the novel Paper towns is, follow your dreams. Never look back and regret what you left behind because the fact of the matter is you will find better when you arrive to the destination you were looking to end up, and the dreams you're looking to accomplish. The theme is telling you to stop looking at people as they appear, and look at them for who they are instead of their fake persona.
Margo often talks about Florida calling it a "Paper Town" one of the quotes Margo says is, " You will go to the paper towns and you will never come back. " (Green)
This sentence shows that the theme is about doing what you choose in life, and never look at what you left behind.
Another quote, is "You can see how fake it all is. It's a paper town. I mean, look at it!"
She's explaining to Quentin, that the city isn't at all what it looks like. It isn't as perfect as it may appear, just like people. Making this quote add to the theme, where you need to ignore everything that you're leaving behind and choose the live you want and don't follow all the fake people, in this fake town.
“The way you think about a person isn't the way they actually are.” (Green)
This quote is returning to the part of the theme, where you can't just think a person is who they appear to be. You need to look inside them and you need to see who they truly are not who they're trying to look.
“Did you know that for pretty much the entire history of the human species, the average life span was less than thirty years? You could count on ten years or so of real adulthood, right? There was no planning for retirement, There was no planning for a career. There was no planning. No time for planning. No time for a future. But then the life spans started getting longer, and people started having more and more future. And now life has become the future. Every moment of your life is lived for the future--you go to high school so you can go to college so you can get a good job so you can get a nice house so you can afford to send your kids to college so they can get a good job so they can get a nice house so they can afford to send their kids to college.” (Green)
I feel this quote relates to the theme very significantly. The reason being is, it's explaining that people live and grow up, so they can go to college or university and live the life they're told to. But the theme is telling you to do what you want, forget everyone, and ignore what they suggest. Because, if you go to college and do what you're supposed to are you really living? Or are you just living life the way society expects you to.
